Central Govt had given permission through its resolution dated 17th June, 2010 to establish the Interim AcSIR. The Academy of Scientific and Innovative Research Act, 2011 received assent of the President of India on 7th February, 2012 and was notified in the Gazette on 3rd April, 2012.

Under the AcSIR, NIIST has initiated Ph.D. programs for the interim Academy.
