CSIR-NIIST and SUPSI exchanged MoU in the presence of Swiss Federal Minister, Ms. Simonetta Sommaruga. Also seen in the picture from left to right are, Dr. Adersh Asok (Scientist, CSIR-NIIST), Dr. A. Ajayaghosh (Director, CSIR-NIIST), Dr. Roman Rudel (Director, ISAAC-SUPSI), and Dr. Pierluigi Bonomo (Head of Swiss BIPV Competence Center, SUPSI).
Can buildings look great and be energy efficient at the same time? These days architects are learning how to incorporate solar cells into curtains, walls, roof tiles, and railings, know as Building Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV).
The CSIR-National Institute for Interdisciplinary Science and Technology (NIIST) at Thiruvanthapuram, Kerala is doing pioneering R&D on BIPV to revolutionise the Indian construction sector, which is expected to register an impressive growth between 20 and 30 billion m2 of new constructions in the coming decades. CSIR-NIIST is spearheading the activities on solar optics for light energy management in the country, a key technology competence for advancing BIPV. The institute has successfully prototyped and demonstrated innovative optics solutions generating industrial enquires and research collaborations.
University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Italian Switzerland (SUPSI), with its Swiss BIPV Competence Centre is the global leader in the BIPV field, since 2004. Finally, SUPSI and CSIR-NIIST decided to join hands to enhance competence in this field. The 1st Indo-Swiss Workshop on Building Integrated Solar Energy Systems was organised jointly by CSIR-NIIST and SUPSI on 17th October 2019, marking a strong leap forward for implementing solar architecture and technology innovations in India and European Union.
An MoU was exchanged between CSIR-NIIST director, Dr. A. Ajayaghosh and ISAAC-SUPSI director, Dr. Roman Rudel in the presence of Swiss Federal Minister, Ms. Simonetta Sommaruga at Bangalore. Subsequently, a bridging grant was sanctioned by Swiss Leading House to initiate this Indo-Swiss collaboration. The activities will be led by Dr. Adersh Asok, Scientist, Photosciences and Photonics Section of Chemical Sciences and Technology Division, CSIR-NIIST, and Dr. Pierluigi Bonomo, Head of Swiss BIPV Competence Center, SUPSI. The proposed activities will open up potential research & technology exchanges, and its implementation.
