Thermally assisted photonic inversion of supramolecular handedness

Heat and light from the sun may have a strong influence on the molecular chirality and supramolecular handedness of natural creations, such as seashells. In their Communication on page 10505 ff.,A. Ajayaghosh et al. establish that the inherent helicity of a synthetic photochromic molecular self-assembly can be biased towards the opposite direction by the action of heat and light. A model for this process through a deformation–reformation pathway is shown (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2012, 51, 10505-10509)
