CSIR-NIIST has a strong presence in most of the sub-verticals under the Energy and Energy Devices (EED) theme of CSIR. Additionally, CSIR-NIIST serves as the Nodal Lab for Energy Conversion and Related Devices, a sub-vertical of EED. To streamline these activities and to place greater emphasis on energy generation, storage and management, a dedicated centre was conceptualized. Thus, the Centre for Sustainable Energy Technologies (C-SET) was created and was inaugurated by Hon. Member of NITI Aayog, Dr. V. K. Saraswat on 28 July 2023. The Centre has demonstrated expertise in 3rd generation photovoltaics, distributed renewable energy systems including agrivoltaics and building integrated photovoltaics, green hydrogen, fuel cells, supercapacitors and batteries, thermoelectric generators, smart windows, energy efficient photodetectors and solid-state lighting. In short, the Centre strives to realise the UN's sustainable development goal No.7; Affordable and Clean Energy - Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all.
