Sustained R& D efforts for over 2 decades on the development of environment friendly and more viable processes for the production of synthetic rutile, has resulted in transfer of a major technology under public private partnership mode. NIIST has transferred a technology for setting up of a commercial plant of 60000 TPA capacity synthetic rutile to M./s Cochin Minerals and Rutile Limited.
Development of a process for sol gel nano size self-cleaning (photoactive) titanium oxide powders and coatings.
Anti-algal titania nano coatings on glass and ceramic surfaces, and ultra filtration and membranes.
Sol gel process for synthesis of nano crystalline rare earth phosphates of size
sizeDevelopment of sol gel mesoporous Silica micro spheres for catalytic and gas storage applications.
Publications
Over the years, the research activity of the Photosciences and Photonics Section has resulted in more than three hundred publications of international repute. Some of the significant works of the section published in the international journals listed below:
Angew. Chem.
Chem. Res. Rev.
J. Am. Chem. Soc.
The central theme of organic synthesis is making and breaking of bonds in a selective and controlled fashion in order to synthesize compounds of specific interest leading to pharamaceuticals, insecticidal and other biologically active compounds. A number of novel synthetic methodologies based on pericyclic reactions, chemical electron transfer, tin mediated radical cyclization, transition metal catalysis and muticomponent reactions have been developed.
Development of bioprocess for the production of alcohol from cassava.
Development of laboratory bioprocesses for the production of industrial and therapeutic enzymes, which include glucoamylase, alpha amylase, protease, lipase, L-glutaminase, xylanase, phytase, and inulinase.
Development of laboratory bioprocess for the production of L-glutamic acid, citric acid, aroma compounds and mushrooms.
